The Canon EOS R5 has some serious overheating issues... let's fix it!

Here's the R5 in question: amzn.to/39w5PAT (yes, it was a bit nerve-racking opening such an expensive camera!)

    • I have improvement of your DIY builded on Heat_pipe idea. Could you machine cavities (or middle sandwitched part) with in the your 3mm DIY copperblock. Copper block could be constructed from 6 parts instead of 3. Put copper wick (or copper wool) and drop of DMS (as coolant) inside cavities.

  • A bit late to the party but there is a safety regulation that calls for a limit to temperature rise on materials which end user touches, I think it is around 52-53C? Coupled with the fact that it should be fairly well sealed from dust etc (its not officially IP rated I assume but I guess dust in camera = dead), they wouldn't want to risk having any openings. Great video, and much more professional finish than I expected! thank you.

  • Hey could you please put captions on your videos or at least turn on auto captions? This video has been sitting in my Watch Later since it came out because I can't watch it since I'm deaf. Captions would make your videos accessible to not only deaf people but people who are hard of hearing or have auditory processing difficulties. Thanks!

  • People saying that they should just get a dedicated video camera instead of photo camera that has a video feature - no. This camera was coined as groundbreaking for its 8K recording feature - a feature that is broken. Saying people should buy another product is ludicrous when this product was advertised and intended for 8K video recording. I for one would not buy this camera for its recording capabilities alone; however, if I was looking for a stills camera capable of recording high quality video - it would have turned my head. I wish people would stop making excuses for companies delivering broken promises. It only fuels the idea that it’s okay to give us poorly designed products at a premium-designed price.

  • 2:35 : It's not, it's why you should not use these for long, continuous recordings like live-events. Video-camera's (even the ENG-style ones) still very much have their place, even though some of the really hardcore "I want cinematic bokeh in my shots!"-people really want you to believe otherwise (completely ignoring shoulder mount ENG-style camcorders are still very much a thing in the broadcast industry). People should really stop thinking they have a videocamera when all the videofunction really is is something that people should consider to be an extra, a luxury that the camera has not been designed around. If you would see the amount of cooling on even a single CMOS-videocamera sensor (let alone a 3-CMOS camera) it's so clear why photocamera's-with-a-video-function suffer from heat issues.

  • My 650D used to over heat after 30/45mins of using it as a webcam on my pc, bought a 120mm fan and put it behind the camera when the screen is flipped out, seems to have solved the overheating problem :P

  • Canon should use even more advanced nanotechnology which not only forms modules but allows for the camera to generate energy fields. They should use compositionthat consists of Smart Gold-Titanium Nano-Particles, giving the camera greater adaptability, durability, power and flexibility combination. And that would solve all over-heating. lol

  • Who puts thermal paste on a circuit board? The main purpose of thermal pay is to transfer heat and decrease the friction between the cpu and the radiator. In your case you could’ve short volt the board and would’ve been better of with a 3mm thermal led that’s used for purposes like so...

  • I wouldn't put a fan on it... Because its a cam and records video and sound right? A fan is source of vibration + sound... I would use just the heatsink.

  • Surface temps of electrical devices limited by IEC, thats they don't use suraface of the equment as a cooler ... For example : MacBook Air M1 is a fanless laptop , gets toasty and downclock after 5min of heavy workload , there is no thermal pads between cpu block and shiny and big Al surface , Actually there are isolation material... LinusTechTips removed that isolation and added thermal pads and Macbook Air kept his clock high as MacBook Pro M1 sometimes beats Pro , but at the downside outside of the laptop is hot and abow threshold of pain... Non moded Air is half a degree below of thresh hold of pain... So they kept laptop slower/warm at the cost of being able to holdable... This might be the issue why Canon left the desgin in that way... DSLR s are degined to be hold by hands so their surface temps needs to be lower than a laptop which is mostly on ur covered lap or a desk...

    • After spending a fortune on a camera someone wrongfully perceived to be an actual replacement for something called a videocamera just for a photocamera having "a video function". People really need to learn that videocamera's still very much have their place exactly because of the problem shown in this video, the cooling in them is much more thorough, and in some videocamera's not only passive, but active as well in the form of a small fan creating a small bit of airflow).

Taken a step further, with you other modifications, what results would having that entire back plastic replaced with metal yeild? Could the original plastic part be used to cast a mold?

  • This is really nice an elegant solution for sure, maintaining the look of the original camera but adding to its cooling capacity immensely. If that back portion where the copper is nearest the surface is only plastic one could also make a hole for a slightly thicker piece of copper to have access to open air, and possibly texture it with small channels to increase surface area and turn the spreader into more of a heatsink. I don't know if this would allow for unlimited runtime with passive cooling, but it would certainly extend it further, since not only would the insulating layer be absent in at least some portion of the back allowing more efficient transfer to fresh air, but increased mass of the heat spreader will always increase the time it takes to heat up. Though depending on how thick the plastic is it may not be enough difference to make a difference based on mass alone.
